Overview of BioNEST activities
- Incubation space available: The Biotechnology Business Incubation facility is currently a small space of 3,500 sq. ft. with capacity to support up to 14 innovators/startups at a time.
- Startups supported: In the five years the facility has been operational, 38 innovators and startups across different biotechnology domains have been incubated.
- Impact in numbers: Of these, 24 startups have graduated and launched products into the market. They jointly filed more than 30 IPs, created over 200 jobs, and raised funds to the tune of over Rs. 50 Cr. The incubator also runs with three dedicated full-time staff in its phase-1.
- Impact on the innovation ecosystem: The incubator promotes entrepreneurship across the country, guiding newly opened incubators and universities on policies, outreach, and awareness for funding and support systems. Many resident startups developed interventions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, supported by the incubator on high priority.
- Stages of incubatee startups: In the first phase, the incubator supports ideation to proof-of-concept startups (TRL 2 to TRL 6) with physical incubation, while startups that don't need product-development facilities are backed in virtual incubation mode. The average incubation period is two years, extendable on reasonable requirements.
- Other soft services extended: End-to-end support for academic startups and first-generation entrepreneurs across technology commercialization. Startups are linked to an IIT Delhi faculty member for technical mentoring, with support to refine business plans and prepare for funding. FITT's IPR and tech-transfer strengths are extended to startups for in-house guidance.
- Funding options available: FITT manages various funding programmes for startups across stages of their development cycle — from ideation and immersion to market entry and expansion.
BioNEST@IITD scale-up
The BioNEST@IITD scale-up is planned in a dedicated area of 20,000 sq. ft. (plus shared facilities) at the Research and Innovation Park on the IIT Delhi campus. The 4th floor of the building will be dedicated to the BioNEST facility, with additional shared spaces for events, conferences, and meetings in the same building.
Infrastructure — three main facilities are proposed under this incubation unit:
- Fabrication Lab
- Calibration Lab
- Common Bio-Lab
Workflows in the Bio-Lab
- Cell and microbial culture: media preparation, sterilization, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, cell imager, bioreactors and incubators, and storage facilities.
- Molecular biology: cell imager, Nanodrop, PCR, liquid handling system, gel apparatus and gel doc (electroporator may be purchased later; cell sorter may be used at the IIT Delhi central facility).
- Downstream processing: TFF, Akta purifiers, and a western blotting system.
